Is Kaaba Black Cube of Saturn?!

January 23, 2015

I have heard such claims, have you? While a cube certainly had meant something to ancient pagan peoples and those who worshiped mythic being Saturn, the fact that Kaaba is in the shape of a cube means simply that that is how earlier people imagined a house (and still many build houses in the shape of cubes today!). Since it was originally built as a house of worship, it seems natural that people would build it as they would their own house: in a shape of cube or a rectangle, depending of the size and purpose.

Muslims believe that it was prophet Abraham (Ibrahim, in Arabic) pbuh who built Kaaba first in honor of God Almighty SWT. The story of Abraham pbuh and his son Ishmael pbuh is that Abraham pbuh left his firstborn and his mother Hagar r.a. in the Arabian desert. The father and the son built the Kaaba to establish the worship of One God in that area where Ishmael is to establish his family and live. In the Noble Qur’an chapter 2, verse (ayat) 127 it says: ” And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.”

Common myths: is it a “meteorite” or cube of Saturn?

Many non-Muslims are unaware that the Kaaba serves just as a unifying direction of prayer (Qibla=direction in Arabic language), not the object of worship. Those who do not know: the Kaaba was not first Qibla for Muslims. Initially, the Qiblah was Jerusalem–direction of prayer toward the Temple of Solomon pbuh. However, Allah SWT changed the direction of prayer in Qur’an chapter 2, verse 144 and since that change the Kaaba has been the only direction. Anti-Islam pundits want to make a connection between Biblical prophecy from New Testament about a fallen ‘wormwood’ meteorite to say that this Kaaba is the same object. It is not. If this “meteorite” has fallen from anywhere for sure we would find historians make a reference to that. None exists to support this theory. Further, the wormwood prophecy we find in Revelation 8:11 that discusses the End Times scenario. There it is said that a burning star called Wormwood falls from the heavens poisoning 1/3 of human water supplies, killing many people. Hmm. Well, to my understanding and the understanding of many Christian/Biblical scholars John is supposedly talking about a future vision of End Times scenario. Where is it documented that a burning meteorite struck the Earth in the Arabian desert killing of many people? While a meteorite can for sure poison a water supply due to its gases, there is no documented evidence that Kaaba has ever done that. Also, it is important to note that the Arab Christians in the pre-Islamic Arabia used to erect their icons inside the Kaaba too according to some sources. If Kaaba were the Wormwood or a cube of Saturn would Christians do such?

The only reason why some non-Muslims call Kaaba the “cube of Saturn” is because it is covered in black. The claim is that black is the color of Saturn. But, throughout the history the color has been ascribed to other ancient idols such as Isis, Egyptian Queen of Heaven. Therefore, Saturn has no monopoly over the color black (nor does anyone have an exclusive right to a color, in my personal opinion). What most of those anti-Islam pundits fail to tell their followers is that the color black is not the only color used to cover Kaaba. According to in Messenger Muhammad’s pbuh time Kaaba used to be covered in many different colors like red, green or white. The website states: “We are so used to the Kaaba being covered in the trademark black Kiswah  … However, this tradition seems to have started at the time of the Abbasids (whose household color was black) and before this the Kaaba was covered in multiple colors including green, red and even white.” Muslims have no attachment to the color of the cloth Kiswah. The only reason why Kaaba is covered is out of respect since it is our direction of prayer and to make it look prettier.

In the past people were allowed to enter Kaaba and pray directly inside it. However, with the number of believers rising this has been restricted.

Here is a look of the inside of Kaaba:

Then why does walking around the black “house” look exactly like the North Pole of Saturn lol. Literally exactly the same…

That is an interesting question. I have not done thorough research yet, but majority of Muslims agree that circling the Kaaba signifies unity of Muslims as well as “turning” toward the Creator 7 times (we circle 7 times Kaaba). Kaaba simply signifies a center of worship, contentedness. Some have even suggested that circling around Kaaba reminds of heavenly bodies circling around its center. Everything circles around something: moon circles the Earth, our planet circles around the Sun, the Sun circles the center of the Milky Way galaxy, the galaxy circles around something else (maybe the center of the universe?). Just as some Christians cross themselves 3 times, with 3 fingers. It is a ritual of a spiritual significance. Sometimes, we humans adopt ancient ways and make them our own. Does not mean that the act itself is evil or wrong simply because ancient people practiced it. It is all about intention. The Message of Qur’an appeared in hostile times. Too much change all at once meant more hostility toward the Qur’an and It’s Message. Therefore, I am speculating, that though circling Kaaba was an ancient practice it stayed with the Muslims. Only the intention of it changed: instead of circling the Kaaba and calling on the ancient idols, Muslims circle the Kaaba in the honor of One True Creator. Simple as that. Think of the Christmas Tree. Jesus pbuh never had a Christmas Tree. There was no such thing as Christmas Tree for him. Yet, today’s Christians celebrate his birth with a Christmas Tree. The decorated tree is actually of pagan origin, adopted by Christians in Europe. Is the tree itself evil? No. But the intention of setting up the tree has changed. Instead of celebrating winter solstice and pagan idol signifying coming Spring, now it is directed to Jesus pbuh. It is all about intention.

Remember, at many points over time, the “Hateem” / semi circle piece, was integrated into the actual structure, thus making It a rectangle, with a semi circle for one side. Then It changed to its current form, and vis-a-vis. I stand to be corrected, but the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) even desired that it be rebuilt that way. Which it was at a later time, before being damaged by floods and then rebuilt as 2 separate “structures” again.

The claim about It being a “black cube” for Saturn worship is false. It is a brown/grey brick structure not even entirely square, let alone a perfect cube.
