Famous Muslim Women Leaders

Many times when someone thinks of religious Muslim women, we immediately think of someone who is subjugated, oppressed and illiterate. Well, history has shown that Muslim women have played important part in the Muslim communities as leaders. Here is a list of some of these amazing women:

A’ishah bint Abu Bakr (613–678 CE)–she was the wife of Prophet Muhammad pbuh and for many Muslims to this day she is called Mother of Muslims. Many have come to A’ishah r.a. for advice in the matter of religion after Prophet’s pbuh death. She is also one of the major contributors to the written traditions (hadiths). A’ishah became an important figure during the first Muslim civil war, after Prophet’s pbuh death.

Cara Zon of Carcasson–she was a governor in Muslim Spain. Led city defense against Charles the great.

Edita Tahiri–prime minister of Kosovo

Kholoud Al-Faqih–Sharia Judge in Ramallah

Lalla Fatma N’Soumer–religious scholar and resistance fighter

Nana Asma’u–poet and scholar

Nursuna Memecan–member of the Turkish parliament

Sultana Raziyya–first Muslim female ruler in the Muslim history; Sultana of Delphi 1236-1240

Benazir Bhutto-prime minister of Pakistan

Roza Otunbayeva–president of Kyrgyzstan 2010-2011

Sheikh Hasina–prime minister of Bangladesh

Megawati Sukanoputri–president of Indonesia 2001-2004

Atifete Jahjaga–president of Kosovo 2011

Mame Madior Boye-Senegal’s Minister of Justice in 2000, and Prime Minister 2001–2002

Tansu Ciller–Prime Minister of Turkey 1993

Queen Rania of Jordan

Regent Caliph Mother of Egypt 1046-1062–she was an ex-slave from Sudan who rose to be a regent queen.

Queen Ahmadilidyn of Urmiya Dynasty of Perisa 1208-1220–succeeded her father to the throne
