Is Imam Mahdi the biblical Anti-Christ?

June 17, 2011

There is a book by Chris White who argues the same point I am making in his book: “The Islamic Antichrist Debunked.” You can find it on Amazon fairly cheap. Anyway, here is my humble take on this topic.

There is a book written by Joel Richardson called “The Islamic Antichrist.” I have not read this book (nor do I intend to), but have read reviews. It seems that the author wants his readers to believe that expected Imam Mahdi (the Guided One) is the Anti-Christ prophesized in the Holy Bible. Nothing is far from the truth.

But, before I disprove Mr. Richardson’s claim, let me tell you that Imam Mahdi and Dajjal (anti-Christ, the False Messiah) are not mentioned in the Holy Qur’an at all. Surprised? Well, it is a fact that no one can dispute. All the Islamic sources that talk about Dajjal (the Antichrist) and Imam Mahdi come from the collection of Hadiths (written traditions).

So, let me begin by explaining Muslim beliefs about Imam Mahdi. Shiite Muslims and Sunni Muslims have different beliefs about Imam Mahdi mainly because some of the hadiths (written traditions) they use are not the same. As a result, various sub-sects that came into being have different beliefs about Imam Mahdi as well. However, all Muslims do not consider Imam Mahdi to be  Prophet to come. All Muslims believe that the Last Prophet of God was Muhammad. Also, Imam Mahdi is not believed to be the Messiah either. The only Messiah recognized by all Muslims is Prophet Jesus pbuh, the one promised to the House of Israel—and the one who is expected to come in his Second Coming. In a nut shell, here are descriptions about Imam Mahdi:

Sunni Muslim (majority Muslims) view:

*Imam Muhammad Mahdi will be a descendant of Prophet Muhammad pbuh.

*Has not yet been born.

* He will be tall
* He will be fair complexioned
* His facial features will be similar to those of Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His character will be exactly like that of Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His father’s name will be Abdullah
* His mother’s name will be Aamina
* He will speak with a slight stutter and occasionally this stutter will frustrate him causing him to hit his hand upon his thigh.
* His age at the time of his emergence will be forty years
* He will receive Knowledge from Allah.

* At the time of his emergence Muslims will experience great suffering from non-Muslims and there will be great tribulations

*People will recognize him inMecca and will forcefully pledge their allegiance to him (will demand him to lead them).

*He will lead Muslims in a world-wide campaign against the forces of Dajjal (the False Messiah/aka Anti-Christ)

*He will be a normal human being with no special powers

*He will precede Jesus’ pbuh Second Coming and will be assisted by Jesus pbuh

*He will die.

Shiite Muslim (minority Muslims) view:

*Mahdi will be descendant of Prophet Muhammad pbuh

*Born inIraq in the year 255 AH (Islamic lunar calendar),

*He is still alive, centuries old, and in occultation, and will reappear

*He is the awaited 12th imam the Shiite Muslims (Shiite Muslims believe that there is only 12 Rightly Guided Imams–divinely appointed)

*Mahdi is most pious, just, learned of all people

*Mahdi will reappear inMecca and will organize world-wide revolution for justice

*He will precede Jesus’ pbuh Second Coming

* Will fight Dajjal (Anti-Christ) and will be helped by Jesus pbuh

* Mahdi will be martyred and will die. When this happens all people will die, and the Judgment Day will begin.

As you can see, the beliefs are different. Now, what does the Holy Bible say about the Anti-Christ? Here is a short description:

*Man of sin and son of perdition, lawless

*Might be ex-Jew (” Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers..” )

*Great military leader

*Will be a great orator

*He will have a false prophet with him to promote him

*Opposed to Jesus’ teachings and God

*Will claim to be divine and will demand worship

*Anyone who does not believe him divine and does not worship him will be attacked/killed

*Will have a mark and will demand that everyone be marked

*Will make pact withIsrael, but will break it and will attack the Jews of Israel

*Will have Solomon’sTemplerebuilt

*Will be one of the 10 kings

*He will appear to be resurrected from dead, as part of his miracle after being wounded in the head

*He could be gay, as he will not have desire for women

*Will conquer through treaties and wars

*He will be very popular around the world

*He will rise to power over 3, then later 10 nations

Now that you got all the descriptions, let me introduce to you non-Muslim claims about Imam Mahdi and what the reality about Imam Mahdi is from a Muslim perspective.

What the Bible says about the Antichrist

Anti-Muslim claims about what Islam and the Koran say about Mahdi 12th Imam (12th being only from Shiite Muslims’ belief) and the facts from islamic sources:

The antichrist will be an unparalleled leader in ability to speak and lead Claim: The Imam Al Madhi will be an unparalleled leader in ability to speak and lead

FACT: Imam Mahdi will lead only Muslims. His beliefs about Islam will help Muslim people clarify the true Islamic teachings that will mostly be lost in the End Times. His speech will be impaired by stutter according to the Sunni Muslim belief.

The False Prophet will support the antichrist in deceiving the world into accepting and following the Antichrist. Claim: A “Muslim Jesus” will “return” and support the Imam Al Madhi in getting the world to accept the Imam Al Madhi and follow him.

FACT: Sunni view of Imam Mahdi is that he will be fighting the forces of Anti-Christ. Imam Mahdi is expected to lead people (Muslims) into survival of Islam, NOT into forcing others into Islam. Shia view of Imam Mahdi states that he will lead Muslims into organizing world to stand up against the world-wide injustice. In both views, Jesus pbuh comes back not as a promoter of Imam Mahdi, but as humanity’s Helper against the most evil forces the world is yet to see (the Anti-Christ).

The Antichrist and the False Prophet will have a powerful army that will do great damage to the Earth in order to subdue it and follow them. Claim: The Imam Al Madhi and the Muslim “Jesus” will have a powerful army that will do great damage to the Earth in order to subdue it and cause everyone to follow them.

FACT: Imam Mahdi and his army will fight for their rights to exist. Their fight is not about forcing others to be like them, but to ensure the survival of their people.

The False Prophet is described as a Dragon in Lamb’s clothing Claim: The Muslim “Jesus” will come bearing the name that the world knows as the Lamb of God and yet teach Islam.

FACT: The reference to Jesus pbuh as a lamb is very much Christian. No such reference is given to Jesus in any of the Islamic sources, as he is not seen as a sacrificial Lamb of God in Islam. Therefore, Dragon in Lamb’s clothing can only mean that the Antichrist will speak as a Christian. Remember too, that the “Muslim” Jesus descends from the sky when the fight with Anti-Christ is almost to its end. The Biblical Antichrist is very much earthly and does not descend from anything.

The Antichrist and the False Prophet establish a New World Order Claim: The Imam Al Madhi and the Muslim “Jesus” establish a New World Order

FACT: When Imam Al-Mahdi dies, Jesus will rule the world according to Islamic beliefs. But his rule will not be forever, as Gog and Magog will reappear and attack on all sides.

The Antichrist and False Prophet will adopt a universal and mandatory religion Claim: The Imam Al Madhi and the Muslim “Jesus” will institute Islam as the only acceptable religion.

FACT: To Muslims, Islam is the only accepteable belief. Since Muslims believe Jesus pbuh to be a Muslim too, it is understandable that Jesus is expected by them to rule as a Muslim. Jesus’ Second Coming is expected to usher the golden age of Islam.

The Antichrist will have a specific agenda to kill as many Jews as possible. Claim: The Imam Al Madhi and the Muslim “Jesus” will have an order from God to root out and kill all Jews.

FACT:  According to the Book of Revelation, the End Times Jews of Israel will mostly support the Anti-Christ. Only a small remnant is expected to refuse to believe in the Antichrist. The Jews are still awaiting their Messiah and refuse to believe Jesus pbuh was the promised Messiah of Israel. God’s Word, the Holy Qur’an, does not state any such order for Jesus pbuh to be killing Jews.

The Antichrist will set himself up in the Jewish Temple inJerusalemas his seat of authority. Claim: The Imam Al Madhi will establish the Islamic Caliphate fromJerusalem. The Caliphate is a religious and political leader of all Islam and all Muslims. With the whole world having to accept Islam he will in effect be a world ruler fromJerusalem

FACT: In order for a Jewish Temple to be built, Imam Mahdi would have to accept Jews’ claim that the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque is sitting on the ruins of the Solomon’sTemple. As a result, Imam Mahdi would have to destroy Al-Aqsa, considered second holiest place for Muslims. This act would immediately cause Muslims to reject him.

.The Antichrist will perform many miracles in order to deceive many into following him. Claim: The Imam Al Madhi will also be able to perform many miracles.

FACT: Only 15% of the Muslims in the world (Shiite Muslims) believe Imam Mahdi to have some special powers. As you could see at the beginning of this post, Shiite Muslims believe that Imam Mahdi is still alive, that is: hundreds of years old. 85% of Muslims world-wide believe Imam Mahdi is not born yet, and that he has no special powers/will not perform miracles.

The Antichrist will make a peace treaty withIsraelfor 7 years. Claim: The Imam Al Madhi will make a peace treaty withIsraelfor 7 years.

FACT: No such claim about treaty between the Jews and Imam Mahdi.

Jesus at his second coming will defendJerusalemandIsraelfrom an attack by a coalition of nations led by the Antichrist and the False Prophet. Claim: Warns that the Dajjal, the Muslim Antichrist, will appear and fool Jews into thinking he is Jesus the Messiah and fight for them. The Koran warns Muslims to ignore everything he says and flee from him.

FACT: The Holy Qur’an does not mention anti-Christ and Imam Mahdi. Those two are only mentioned in the Hadiths (written sayings) that are not part of the Holy Qur’an. Dajjal (Anti-Christ, False Messiah) will have many followers, even some Muslims who will follow Sufiyani (evil tyrant, oppressor of Muslims). Among Dajjal’s followers, the Hadiths state there will be 70,000 Jews. There is more Jews around the world than that.

Antichrist will claim to be divine Claim: Muslim Jesus demands worship.

FACT: All Muslims believe that the only One to be worshiped is Allah (God) SWT. All Muslims consider Jesus pbuh to be one of the greatest Prophets and therefore human. Muslims do not believe that Jesus pbuh upon his return/Second Coming will demand worship, as only Allah SWT can be worshiped!

Nice reply to those who r raising new propaganda against Islam day by day….
If prophet Mohammad(pbuh) is not a prophet then Jesus( pbuh) is also not a prophet or messiah or anything rather a fake (as Jews used to say) …
It is Islam who testifies that Jesus( pbuh) is a true messiah and prophet( pbuh) . Jews still considered Jesus( pbuh) as a false messiah …. So Christians must think about this ….
Jesus( pbuh) is truth because prophet Mohammad( pbuh) is truth …Jesus( pbuh) is not God rather a true prophet of God who submit his will to God . And Prophet Mohammad( pbuh) is the best man ever walk on this earth and the best prophet… He is the true prophet and we believe on his prophet hood and we love him a lot . Haters r jealous of him ……

Assalam alykam I cant believe this issue is still going on Imam Mahdi is just a man and does not do any miracles nor does he call for the worship of himself. the anti christ in bible and Islam demands worship. we should agree together and say the anti christ is a one claiming to be God not Imam Mahdi.. Jesus comes back as a leader and a ruler not a prophet nor is Imam Mahdi is prophet he is just a leader of the muslims

Wa alykumussalam, Isa James. You are right, Imam Mahdi is NOT a Messiah or a Prophet. He will just be a just Muslim leader. Prophet Jesus pbuh (Isa saws) is the Messiah and, I believe, for us Muslims he will always be our Prophet pbuh. I promised one of my readers that I will do some research regarding the hadith I reposted in my post. My reader asked me a legitimate question, so I promised that I will do research. I did, and based on my research, Imam Mahdi and biblical Anti-Christ are NOT the same person. They may exist at the same time, as two opposing leadership personalities, but will NOT be the same person. That is why I followed up with another post to provide further information. The purpose of my blog is to disprove lies and attacks against Islam, because as we all can notice there is a lot of disinformation going around. Most recently, some non-Muslims are so determined to “prove” Islam as “anti-Christ” religion and everything related to Islam as “evil.” I am not an imam, nor am I a scholar, but I feel it is my duty as a Muslim to defend my religion Islam, and to tell people (Muslims and non-Muslims) the truth.

I chose Islam because it is my faith, I find that many do not understand it and that islamophobes have made up too many lies. So, as a Muslim, I tried to disprove their falsehoods. It is my duty as a Muslim do defend my faith and tell people the truth about it. I noticed in your screen name is Christianity. What about you doing some blogging about Christianity? WordPress.com is free to use, and as you can see you can use various mediums to communicate your ideas and information. It is very easy to set up too. Best of luck.

hi,you know half of the shia hadithe’s you said doesnt excist, i must say all of them are made up by people who want to tell wrong sources to the people to put a bad idea about shia muslims on the people’s mind by brain washing them with words. why do you go around and tell lies to people who dont have the knowledge of neither quran or hadithe’s, do not speak about something you dont have knowledge of. even some sunnies believe in the right shia hadithes not yours wich you have made up, but the true hadithes narraited by the shia muslims, even the prophet Mohammad in sahih bukhari wich is the must famous book of sunnies says, the mahdi will have my name and he will be from fatimas family ( the ahlulbayt )the only problem the shia sunni have about imam mahdi is the age, shia believe imam mahdi is already born and is hidden bc they tried to kill him many times so he is waithing for the right time, but sunni’s believe that he yet to be born.
and quran mention everything but secretly, if you ask someone who have the knowledge of quran he will explain the meanings for you. i might read hadithes and quran but i still dont have the knowledge to explain the beautiful words the quran mentions about imam mahdi.
and please me and you might not be brothers in faith but as brothers in humanity please dont tell people the wrong sources, dont do this is not worth it, im a muslim and i show so much respekt towards jesus son of marry infact if eny muslim dont believe in jesus he isnt a true muslim and people cant even call him a muslim. and i believe in every prophet sent by god. and i show respect towards my sunni brothers, and i wont ever tell wrong sources to the people for brainwashing them for something wich is not true. so shame on you dont do it trust me it’s not worth it.

Mohammad Mahdi, thank you for your reply. Please indicate where I have made mistakes regarding Shia understanding about Imam Mahdi, and I will gladly correct what I have written. My blog is not meant to cause split between Muslims, to offend or anything similar. My mission here is to disprove false claims and lies about Islam in general. You do have to agree that Shias and Sunnis, with all their sub-sects, have many different understandings about Islam, its practice, teachings and prophecies. Also, if you have references that point to Imam Mahdi being mentioned in the Qur’an, or the dajjal, please let me know. I am not a native Arabic speaker, and therefore I understand that Arabic is very rich in its meaning and difficult to translate in other languages.

Thank you for this post. I have a question for you. You say that there is “No such claim about treaty between the Jews and Imam Mahdi.” Many sites that say there is such a claim, however, refer to a passage that states: “The Prophet said: There will be four peace agreements between you and the Romans. The fourth will be mediated through a person who will be from the progeny of Hadrat Aaron (Honorable Aaron, the brother of Moses) and will be upheld for seven years. The people asked, “O Prophet Muhammad, who will be the imam (leader) of the people at that time?” The Prophet said: He will be from my progeny and will be exactly forty years of age. His face will shine like a star… ” They usually cite “Izzat and‘Arif, p. 40”, which I assume is the book, Al Mahdi and the End of Time. Do you know anything about this particular reference—-what it is referring to?

      Hi James-
Thank you for visiting my blog and posing such an interesting question. I have not heard of the hadith regarding seven years of peace between Mahdi and others, will do research and will get back to you about it. Muslims of different sects use a collection of different hadiths. That is why, Shia traditions about Mahdi are different than Sunni. It may take me a little while to research it. Majority of the Muslim prophecy interpreters agree that “the Romans” refers to the Christians in the West because the Christians are the ones who have been majority in the former Roman lands. One of the scholars that I know of, sheikh Imrah Hosein is of the opinion that the Romans are the Eastern Christians (Russians, Greeks, etc.). Remains to be seen, but they all agree that the end times Romans=Christians. Whenever there is a reference to the Jewish people in hadiths or the Qur’an, they are referred to: as the Jews, People of the Book or people of the House of Israel. According to the Holy Bible, the seven years treaty will be between the state of Israel and the Antichrist. Of course, looking at today’s times, it is possible that in the hadith the title “Romans” may include the Jews as they are in alliance with the West. I know of the hadith that speaks of Muslims being in alliance with the Rum (Romans) and defeating together the Dajjal (Antichrist). However, for whatever reason, the Muslims and the Rum will come into a disagreement about whose religion was responsible for the victory. Muslims are prophesied to attack first. I am not home at the moment, but once I am able to get back on this blog I will post the hadith and its reference.

Shia Mehdi, straight from a shia site…… The writer here is sunni, he hasnt looked deep enough.
“Will the approach and policy of Hadrat al-Qa’im (‘atfs) be the same as that of the Prophet (S)?” The Imam (‘a) replied: “O Zurarah! Never; never. He will not adopt the policy of the Prophet (S) (in dealing with enemies). The Prophet (S) used to deal with enemies leniently, gently and kindly in order to win their hearts and for the people to be acquainted with him. Hadrat al-Qa’im (‘atfs), however, will adopt the policy of killing; he will act according to his order and accept no one’s repentance. Thus, woe be to anyone who would oppose him!”

Rather harsh view/expectation of Imam Mahdi. However, gives a glimpse of how Shias and Sunnis differ about their understanding of Imam Mahdi’s persona and mission.

I did not get that one either. I think Chris is relying on christian interpretation of prophecies as the only source.

Chris is inventing stories. He reads the Bible and evangelical interpretations of if, then concludes that is the 100% truth in regards to what Muslims believe. Chris’ ignorance is such a “bliss.”

I am SO happy to have stumbled across this article this is EXACTLY what I needed to read right now. I was debating with a non-muslim and they used those exact points to tell me that Islam is the religion of the anti-christ. I could not stop crying because I thought it was true that the biblical antichrist and our Imam Mahdi had the same description but I thank God that I found this article which proves them wrong. I feel so guilty for doubting my religion for even a minute.

      Salaam Peace Keeper,
Sometimes non-Muslims attack their own by calling them anti-christ. For the longest time, and even still, many think and believe the pope is the Antichrist. So, do not get too stressed out about the name-calling. Also, if we look at the world ‘anti-christ’, that would mean anyone who opposes Jesus’ teachings. Would that make Jews anti-christ too? After all, Jews do not even think of Jesus as a Prophet, let alone anything that Christians believe.
I personally think that the persona of imam Mahdi is more symbolic than real. The same with Antichrist. I believe these forces exist/will exist at some point, but not the way we may think of them. We are looking to see men (Antichrist v.s. Mahdi), but it could well be that these are different systems and ideologies. Allah SWT Knows best!
We are human, and sometimes we have doubts. Just keep reading about Islam and you will be fine. Reading and searching for knowledge is one among many pillars of Islam (besides the ones we know are the most important!). Be at peace. You may contact me any time. Also, send me any ideas you might have about what topics to address. I have been busy lately with school and work, but will be back soon with more posts.

Islam is antichrist religion. Antichrist will try to change everything. (Sharia law) the antichrist religion will behead those who don’t take the mark of the beast(Bismallah).bismallah in Hebrew is 666. Antichrist will make 7 year peace with Israel. Mahdi rules 7 years. Antichrist will claim Jerusalem. So will Mahdi. Mahdi forms large army. Do does antichrist. Islam is of satan. The real Jesus is coming back but for his church (rapture). Then the world will b in chaos. Then yur Mahdi will come and bring Muslim together to take over world. This was written about hundreds of years before Islam. By the way Allah is NOT God. He is a pagan moon god. Even muhammeds relatives were named after Allah. If u wanna know the truth pray to God and ask him to show himself to u. Ask him if jesus is who he said he is. Muslims are coming to Christ in miraculous numbers. He loves all but won’t force himself on u. Muslims say jesus wasn’t even crucified. Well first century historians say he was. Then he rose. If Christ did not rise from the dead how come the Romans/Jews didn’t show his body to stop the “rumors” about his resurrection. Why did Christianity start where Christ was crucified. Because people saw the risen jesus. Why did the apostles died for belief that they saw the risen jesus. Muhammed was evil. He raped women and married a six yr old. Check out his life. How could such an evil man come from God? Sounds like he was from satan. R u willing to bet eternity on Mohammed. No one will enter heaven except through jesus .

Chris-hi! Welcome to my blog. You said:

        a) “Islam is antichrist religion.”
-proof, please? Is Judaism too an antichrist religion? After all, Jews still deny that Jesus was the Messiah.
        b) Sharia is slightly different from the Mosaic Law of the Old Testament. Read your Old Testament.
        c) As far as I know, Christians have branded many things and living beings as 666: Clinton, Bush, the popes, even star of David. I still have yet to see someone force it upon all world to carry it as a stamp.
        d) Jerusalem is the center stage of all prophecies, be it Christian or not. Mahdi’s movement against Antichrist (Dajjal–the False Messiah) will begin in Saudi Arabia after Muslims will be attacked on all sides, their lands occupied all the way surrounding Mecca. He will be appointed by the people of Mecca as their leader and his movement will advance from there. Not Jerusalem.
        e) Mahdi and Antichrist are two different figures. Please see my post about this subject.

In your comment to my post, you mention a lot of nonsense. I do not take it against you, as you are not informed. However, I hope that you will be allowed to read my earlier posts. Your religious background most likely does not allow you to read anything else outside your religious circle. It is my hope that you will at least consider the facts that I had presented on my blog, and plan to continue to present in the near future.

It is not up to Jesus, but up to God. Jesus was a man, a human being, honored to be the Messiah, a Prophet and a leader. He, according to my faith, does not forgive sins as only God can do such.
